At Rent-a-Cop, one of the things that has always made us cringe, is the low level of training and education in our industry. Its appalling. It has gotten to the stage where by definition, our whole industry is a “Low Skilled” industry. We attract low skilled people and withhold proper training, perpetuating this issue.

To give you an indication at how laughable the situation is, all we have to do is look at the training standards we have for our “Qualified Instructors”. To start as an instructor in the Security Industry at the RTO level, all you need to do is 1 week worth of training. 40 hours of training and you are qualified to educate the whole Australian Security Industry. What a joke, with this amount of training you are little more than a glorified security guard.

The reason why we think this is not good enough, is that we take a moment to look at the assets we are responsible for in our business. At Rent-a-Cop, we protect and secure multi-million dollar businesses. We keep our eyes on hundreds of millions of dollars in physical assets. We also watch over real people’s lives, protecting the most valuable thing of all, people and families.

Given the stakes and potential losses when our industry gets it wrong, it is ridiculous that we still expect so little of our industry professionals, that we expect them to perform in such a role with so little training. It does not make sense that you trust the security industry with so much, given this lack of training and professional standards. It is little wonder that hardly a week goes by without another issue with a bouncer or security guard hitting the press.

We want to change this though.We want to lift the standards across the security industry. We believe the people, assets and businesses we protect are worth more than the “lowest common denominator”. In proof of this, historically at Rent-a-Cop we have only ever hired the most competent security guards we could find. We are going to take it to the next step now though as we believe a professional standards of our industry starts at training.

So what are we going to do about this? Well, we are going to start our own RTO where we only engage competent security trainers. We will call it Rent a Cop SWATT.
